The Client

Trunki designs, distributes and manufactures branded, multifunctional travel products for children.  The company was founded in 2006 by Rob Law when it launched its original ride-on suitcase product.

Turned down by Dragons’ Den, the company is on track to sell two million units of its suitcase worldwide and its travel products are stocked in over 2,500 stores across the UK, as well as 97 countries overseas.  Trunki has won a number of awards including the 2012 SME of the Year at the National Business Awards.  Rob received an MBE for services to business in 2011.

Since the launch of its original suitcase, Trunki has steadily expanded its portfolio of unique products, with the introduction of BoostApak (car seat/back pack), PaddlePak (water resistant character back pack), Travel ToyBox (ride on toy box), SnooziHedz (travel pillow and blanket) and a range of accessories.  The company currently holds license agreements for Gruffalo, Moshi Monsters and Lotus.

The Assignment

In 2013, Trunki received over £3m in investment to fund product development as well as the acceleration of international sales.  Atherton Stone were introduced to the CEO by a mutual contact who thought we could add value to a search Trunki were about to undertake.

Atherton Stone were tasked with identifying candidates for 2 positions viewed as vital to the continued growth of the business in both the UK and International territories.  Cultural fit was a huge part of the brief as Trunki prides itself on having a collaborative environment where work life balance is the norm – this was something the management team refused to compromise on.  As both positions were new to the business, Trunki needed a recruitment partner to help shape the brief and provide an insight into the candidate pool in Bristol.

The Result

Atherton Stone agreed to take on both roles on an exclusive basis and successfully identified candidates within a 6 week period of the initial engagement.  The team spent a lot of time in the Trunki offices providing a real insight into the culture of the business which proved to be very important when meeting and qualifying potential candidates.

The research team were tasked with networking and actively approaching candidates in the South West due to the specific experience required for each position.  This meant Atherton Stone were able to provide Trunki with a list of the best talent in the area – not just those actively looking.

Positions recruited include:

  • Sales & Marketing Director UK / European Category Director
  • Ecommerce Manager

Trevor Bell – Non Executive Director

At Trunki we have used Atherton Stone for a number of key recruitments and I cannot recommend them too highly in the Sales and Marketing and E-Commerce arena.

The team has an outstanding ability to “get” what is really underpinning the brief that the client is giving, and to deliver not just “cookie cutter” options but a real breadth of candidates which enables us as a client to make a really informed decision
